National Day of Writing

National Day of Writing Share the joy of writing, October 20th, 2009 5pm - 8pm McAlister Square Mall, Greenville, SC

This year, we have a special event that we would love to see participation from your classrooms, schools, and districts.  The UWP will celebrating the National Day of Writing in conjunction with the National Council of Teachers of English on October 20th, 2009.  We will be hosting a celebration at 5:00 PM at McAlister Square in Greenville.  Activity booths will be set up for everyone to enjoy different forms of everyday writing, writing will be displayed from area schools, an Open Mic will be taking place, and Melinda Long will be having an author's talk on the center stage.  Beginning at 5:30 PM, writing strategy workshops, our Back to School Special, will begin in the Clemson Education suite. Below you will find information about additional ways you may participate at home, school and at the celebration.

1.  Writing Contest: 3 prizes will be awarded to winners of the "Everyday Writing" contest.  The school with the most pieces of writing will win a Flip video camera, a teacher from Upstate with the most pieces of writing will win a gift card to an area restaurant, and a UWP Teacher Consultant with the most pieces of writing will win a gift card to an area restaurant as well.  Click here for specific information on submitting entries.

2.  Writing Activities: We invite you to schedule "writing" events throughout your day at school on October 20th.  These activities can be district-wide, school-wide, in your classroom, or activities that can be completed by your students at home.  Click below for a list of ideas to get you started.

3.  A Day of Writing: You will also find a sample proclamation here. Please encourage your school to choose to proclaim October 20th a day of writing.  These proclamations have also been sent to school district superintendents to declare a day of writing within your district.

4.  Out of the Box: On center stage, the Young Writers' Tech Camp will be presenting the Out of the Box Film Festival featuring films they created at this years camp. Be sure to catch these examples of writing in motion! YWTC Out of the Box Film Festival
